Contract Signed – Runs In The Family

I can officially announce that my previously self-published novel Runs In The Family has been contracted for re-release by Strigidae Publishing.  More details will follow.  The book will receive a brand new cover from original cover artist Josh Bennett and be edited by Hollie Snider.

Now, why did I cave from the self-publishing effort?

Here’s the thing.  Self-publishing anything is a difficult road.  I have seen little to moderate success with my self-published titles on Amazon, B&N, and Kobo.  Most of the titles I’ve self-published have only just this year turned profitable.  Why?  The whole idea of placing a story on the internet with the “build it and they will come” mentality is wrong.  Self-publishing successfully requires not only a plan, but an ability to churn out works faster and build your audience.  (Find Doug Dandridge on Amazon – a perfect example of what I mean)  I haven’t had that kind of time, and I’ve been flummoxed by the whole marketing aspect to this business.

Placing my novel with a small press (much as I’ve done with Walkabout) gives me the chance to do what I can do on marketing with some help from the publisher.  I still don’t have an agent, and I likely won’t pursue one.  I’m sure the time will come when it might be a sound decision, but it’s not right now.  I have to let go of the book and, to an extent, the marketing of it.  As a writer, I can do two things about marketing my book: worry about it or write the next book.  I’ve done far too much of the former lately.

We haven’t settled on a production schedule.  I will start the editing process on this book next week and I expect to see edits on Walkabout by the end of the month.  It’s a busy time.  To that end, I’ll be reaching out to friends about specific ways you can assist me.  I recently heard something that caught my interest:

“It takes 500 truly dedicated fans to put a book on a bestseller list.”

Let me be clear, I do not have any delusions of grandeur.  What I am looking for are ideas on how to market the book.  How to get the word out and especially to whom.  Everything is in play for this.  If you’re interested in participating, let me know.  There may even be something in it for your time and effort.

In the mean time when you buy a book take a few minutes away from surfing Facebook and leave a review for that book on Amazon or Goodreads.  Your author friends will thank you.
